Haus Mainusch

Be the first to review

The Haus Mainusch is an autonomous, self-organized centre located on the campus of the Johannes Gutenberg‑Universität Mainz in Mainz, Germany.

Originally the former residential house of a professor named Mainusch, it was squatted on 8 June 1988 in order to establish student-run spaces for communication and culture.

Today the facility is run by the “Verein für ein unabhängiges Kommunikationszentrum an der Universität Mainz e. V.”, hosting political and cultural events such as concerts, readings and film screenings. There is a free shop (“Umsonstladen”), an open vegan communal kitchen (Küche für Alle), and library on the premises.

The Haus Mainusch stands on a 520 m² plot at Staudingerweg 23, and although multiple redevelopment plans have threatened its continuation, it continues to operate under a current usage agreement valid until 2025.

In short: the Haus Mainusch is a vibrant, self-managed urban culture and social space on the Mainz university campus—rooted in student activism, open participation and alternative community life.
