Since June 2005, Joe’s Garage has been an autonomous squatted political social center, a meeting place in the Transvaal neighborhood for squatters and non-squatters, subsidy-free, not-for-profit, self-organized, and entirely run by volunteers. New faces and new projects are very welcome, bring your own ideas, and get in touch.
On 11 February 2001, Pretoriusstraat 28 upper floors were squatted. Only in 2005, the ground floor was squatted and transformed into a social center. Joe’s Garage opened to the public in June 2005 with KSU Oost, the squatting assistance, Volkseten Vegazulu, the people’s kitchen, and the weekly giveaway shop. After the Pretoriusstraat 28 eviction on 14 October 2008, Joe’s Garage has reopened across the street at Pretoriusstraat 43, a building squatted since 25 September 2005.
