Sankara Pan-African Library & Café

Be the first to review

Sankara Pan-African Library & Café opened in January 2022 in Bugolobi, Kampala as a community space for decolonial education, gathering, and dialogue. Named for Burkinabè revolutionary Thomas Sankara, the library holds a collection focused on African and African diaspora authors, including titles banned in the United States.

The space sits on a two-acre compound with indoor and outdoor areas. It hosts book launches, film screenings, panel discussions, and workshops. The café serves Ugandan-style meals, coffee, and food throughout the day. Access to the library and its programming is free and open to the community.

Sankara Library is a project of Kusimama Africa, the Ugandan NGO behind the No White Saviors campaign, which works to challenge the white savior complex in development and missionary work across East Africa. The organization is led by Olivia Alaso and operates with an all-Black African staff. Through the library, Kusimama Africa also runs the John Okello Kabalega scholarship program, providing support for students to attend Makerere University.
