CSOA La Strada

Be the first to review

On October 8, 1994, a group of high school and university students decided to create a social center in the heart of Garbatella. We occupied a building that had been unused for more than 10 years in the spaces of the covered market of the neighborhood to return it to the citizens through self-management practices.

The initiatives are multiplying and the choice is to build answers to the needs and desires of those who live in the area: from the dance hall for the elderly to expressive workshops for children, from the film club to the free legal help desk, from popular theater to live music by emerging groups. Always convinced that without memory there is no future, the social center promotes initiatives that revive the memory of the Resistance to Nazi-fascism and that try to free the unresolved memory of the Seventies.

The role of La Strada in all these years has been to offer an escape route from the social dispersion that reigns in the outskirts of the metropolis, experimenting with another form of sociality that believes in the values of anti-fascism, anti-racism and anti-sexism : a landing place where many stories from many generations have met.

Always be able to feel deep within yourself every injustice committed against anyone in any part of the world [Che Guevara]

1994 is also the year of the Zapatista uprising in Mexico and the innovative words of Sub Comandante Marcos and the indigenous people of Chiapas reach us, giving a new meaning to the value of solidarity between peoples and to political action in our territories. Everything for everyone, nothing for us is the starting point from which we start to build new paths of struggle and walking while asking is the way to do it.

In 1996, the social center, also strengthened by the birth of the association Ya Basta! – for the dignity of the peoples against neoliberalism, began a work of knowledge and exchange with the Zapatista brothers and sisters: first as international observers in the militarized communities, then with the March for Indigenous Dignity in 2001, again participating in 2003 in the celebrations for the birth of the Caracoles (a new form of internal organization with which the Zapatistas further open themselves to national and international civil society), up to the meetings of the Zapatista peoples with the peoples of the world that took place in 2007. The bond with the Zapatista communities grows and consolidates so much as to bring this message even into local institutions. In 2002, in fact, the Municipio Roma XI gives life to a twinning with the autonomous Zapatista municipality Vicente Guerrero, of the Caracol of Morelia.

Always on the side of the oppressed, of those who fight for the freedom and self-determination of their people, in 2002 at the birth of the Second Intifada, we go to Palestine to break with our bodies the siege to which the Palestinian people are forced, to support the civil society forced by the Israeli occupation to live without rights and dignity. The years pass and in 2008 we return to Palestine with the project Sport under the siege, which organizes a caravan of non-professional athletes ready to cross the checkpoints and the Wall of Shame imposed by Israel to meet young Palestinian athletes through the game of soccer and basketball.

Over the years, the No Global movement has taken on different forms with the ability to create consensus and multiply conflict, aware of the fact that there is no peace without justice. From the experience of the Tute Bianche to that of the Disobbedienti, today La Strada è in Action, a movement that fights for the right to housing by defending the working classes and the homeless of the city .

In 1997, together with the Corto Circuito social center, we made an unpopular, but right and far-sighted choice: we decided to compete in the administrative elections with two of our independent candidates on the Rifondazione Comunista lists, Luciano Ummarino for Municipio XI and Nunzio D’Erme for the Municipality of Rome. The bet was a winning one and so began our pirate experience in the institutions, with the strength of those who come from below, incorruptible to the power of power. Since then, our guiding star has remained that of the redesign of decision-making processes and therefore of democracy, and for this reason, with the new election of Tarzan (Action candidate) to the City Council, we can say that we have once again succeeded in giving a voice to the voiceless, to the last in the city .

Every day the social center continues to build a new possible way thanks to the passion of many comrades who were not present that distant October 8, 1994; but perhaps this is the great strength that has distinguished La Strada over the years: having given life to many other Roads!

In the fall of 2003, another piece was added to the picture of the rebellious Garbatella: in Via delle Sette Chiese, Le CaSette was born ! With more than ten Italian and migrant families, we rescued some small homes from abandonment and building speculation, thus providing an initial response to the needs of these people. As time went by, in this small housing occupation, the awareness of having to fight for a better future grew; so even today we are fighting so that a sustainable living project is implemented at Le CaSette that includes the exploitation of renewable energy, rainwater and waste recycling.

In recent years of fighting for the right to housing, the self-managed Action desk has given rise to the experimentation of the Nuova Cittadinanza Rights Agency , a municipal desk in defense of the rights denied to all individuals living in Municipio XI. In particular, the Rights Agency carries out important work in the protection and support of individuals or families in housing emergencies, offering free legal advice and accompanying users of the service through every step of the eviction procedures or normalization of the housing situation . Through synergy with this innovative tool, the social center has addressed collective problems such as the regularization of entire migrant communities: for example, the path started with the Afghans – who crowded into the Ostiense Air Terminal – led to the birth of the Casa del Rifugiato in Rome; but also the fight for the redevelopment of the former IPAB San Michele in Tormarancia, which began after the military evacuation of a large community of Moldovan citizens, demonstrates that the active participation of citizens can provide answers to situations of social hardship, improving the quality of life of the entire territory .

Aware that participation is a disruptive element, which can mark a change in the life of the city, we want to organize ourselves with the Enasarco tenants to protect the many who will suffer the disastrous effects of the disposal of the real estate assets of this Institution, and with the citizens of the Municipality to ensure that the area of the former Fiera di Roma is not given away to the usual speculators, but is redeveloped taking into account the territorial needs.

The cultural production of La Strada continues to experiment with new forms and modalities, alternating book and video presentations with concerts and theatrical performances, organizing cultural initiatives in the square, spreading copyleft for free access to culture and knowledge: even today the social center is the only youth organization in the Municipality that offers music and culture at popular prices .

This place, free from the oppression of the strongest and the repression of sheriff mayors, sincerely anti-prohibitionist, offers a free school tutoring service, a free internet point, the projection of the magical Roma matches on a big screen with a small subscription, table football and ping pong available: small things that contribute to creating a different idea of sociality and a better quality of life .
