Animal Liberation Victoria (ALV)

Be the first to review

Animal Liberation Victoria (ALV) is an abolitionist collective based in Melbourne, working to abolish the property status of animals through direct action, public investigation, and community education. Founded in 1978 by Patty Mark, ALV grounds its politics in the position that rejecting speciesism is part of any consistent anti-domination practice. Alongside its campaigns, ALV explicitly names racism, sexism, ageism, and other forms of hierarchy as interconnected with the exploitation of non-human animals. The group operates under an elected committee, sustained by volunteer labor and public donations.

In the early 1990s, ALV developed and popularized the Open Rescue model of direct action. (You can see one of those models in  A Radical Guide’s online course: Hen Rescue Manual.) Activists enter farms and slaughterhouses without concealing their identities, remove animals in critical condition, provide veterinary care, and publish full documentation of what they find. The tactic spread to groups across Europe and North America and directly shaped a generation of international animal liberation organizing. ALV’s investigation campaigns covering the pig, cow, goat, and wool industries have produced footage that reached mainstream media and influenced documented changes in corporate practice.

ALV runs Liberation Sanctuary in rural Victoria, the longest-running farm animal sanctuary in Australia, where animals taken from agricultural contexts live out their lives. ALV also publishes educational resources through its veganeasy.org platform, conducts street outreach and school presentations across Victoria, and organizes public rallies. The collective treats anti-speciesism as part of a broader opposition to hierarchy, linking industrial animal exploitation to the same structures that sustain other forms of domination.
