“Acorn Community Farm is an egalitarian community in central Virginia founded in 1993. We are committed to non-coercive, non-hierarchical, voluntary associations both within our community and within the larger community in which we find ourselves. We are also committed to income-sharing, sustainable living, and creating a vibrant, eclectic culture.
Furthermore, we are members of the Federation of Egalitarian Communities, which means that we hold in common our land. Labor, resources, and income, and that we use this for the good of our community as a whole and our members as individuals. While all members must be enthusiastic about a culture of radical sharing and working with one another, we do not share religious, political, or philosophical beliefs. We use Consensus Decision-making.”
What’s special about them is that for the same reason many new members are understanding what Twin Oaks is, they were the first to leave. Made from Former Twin Oak members; I will say they are anarchist in the way they address labor, it’s voluntary, truly, but the seed exchange business is their main income and selling veggies from their farm for money. But infrastructure, room cleaning, bathroom maintenance, etc. that is self initiated.
Besides that, they don’t like to promote themselves as hard as twin oaks. Although their feelings are reserved, they have been victims of “social capitalist” the type of people whom have a large follower base or come in to sway consensus and leave when thwarted. It was sad when I was there, but they have attracted people for being there and raised families. They just aren’t public about it or withstanding on the times about it, just ideologists surviving in a relic commune.
