How does organizing shape what gets built?
When movements use hierarchical structures to fight hierarchy, what kind of movement culture gets created? When groups make decisions through top-down processes while claiming to build horizontal power, what’s actually being practiced?
Today we’re launching a new podcast series, Means and Ends in Radical Action, exploring one of anarchism’s most persistent debates: the relationship between organizing methods and movement outcomes.
Episode 1: The Relationship Between Means and Ends
This first episode examines why anarchist movements insist that how we organize isn’t separable from what we’re trying to build. It breaks down the core principle: methods actively shape outcomes in four specific ways.
Methods develop capacities – Hierarchical organizing develops skills in following orders and waiting for leadership. Horizontal organizing develops facilitation, collaborative decision-making, and collective problem-solving.
Methods transform consciousness – Participating in horizontal assemblies doesn’t just coordinate action—it changes how people understand power, possibility, and their own agency.
Methods create precedents – When movements use coercive tactics, they normalize coercion as a tool for change. When they build through voluntary cooperation, they establish cooperation as viable.
Methods build material bases – The spaces, networks, and relationships created through organizing either concentrate or distribute power, creating the actual infrastructure within which movements work.
About the Series
Means and Ends in Radical Action is part of A Podcast for Radicals, adapting written content from A Guide for Radicals. This series works through practical questions about organizing: How do we build power without recreating hierarchy? What does accountability look like without coercion? When does tactical flexibility become unprincipled compromise?
Each episode tackles a different aspect of how movements navigate the tension between methods and goals—from transparency and accountability to direct action, strategic flexibility, and learning from contradictions.
