What is Syntopia?

A new word for a new space: syn expresses a togetherness, an interaction, topia stands for a place where this becomes possible. The Syntopia is a shop in Duisburg-Hochfeld, which offers space for independent political and social commitment as well as for non-commercial and alternative culture – a project and city parts shop.

Syntopia is run by the association Mustermensch , which has been supporting an independent socio-cultural center in Duisburg for years, and is supported by other initiatives and groups.

Syntopia sees itself as an open space, where everyone has the opportunity to participate, to discuss ideas and to realize them. To fulfill this claim, Syntopia is not a place for racist, sexist, homophobic or other discrimination.

The Syntopia focuses on self-organization and the strengthening of grassroots structures. This is aimed at the realization of projects and the shop itself, as well as the connection to the neighborhood and the district.

Syntopia is committed to shaping and changing the city from below and to the participation of all people in the urban resources and spaces. Thus, the Syntopia is also part of the movement for a “right to city” in Duisburg and the Ruhr area.

Last but not least, the Syntopia is a stage on the rocky road to an independent socio-cultural center in Duisburg.

What Happens in Syntopia?

Some! Since the opening of the shop in August 2014, a large number of projects have been started, including a “help-to-help-yourself” bike workshop, a free shop / giftbox with clothing, books and all sorts of things; Food rescue with regular fruit and vegetables, cozy movie and bar evenings, vegan hands-on brunch, lectures and discussions on politics and society, weekly homework help for students, monthly reading circle, meeting point for political initiatives, author readings, monthly women’s café, craft workshops and of course, much more is possible! Syntopia is what we all make of it – come over and get involved!

Was ist das Syntopia?

Ein neues Wort für einen neuen Raum: syn drückt ein Miteinander, ein Zusammenwirken aus, topia steht für einen Ort, wo dies ermöglicht wird. Das Syntopia ist ein Ladenlokal in Duisburg-Hochfeld, das Raum bietet für unabhängiges politisches und soziales Engagement sowie für unkommerzielle und alternative Kultur – ein Projekt- und Stadtteilladen.

Das Syntopia wird vom Verein Mustermensch getragen, welcher sich schon seit Jahren für ein unabhängiges sozio-kulturelles Zentrum in Duisburg einsetzt, und von weiteren Initiativen und Gruppen unterstützt.

Dabei versteht sich das Syntopia als offener Raum, wo jede und jeder die Möglichkeit hat, mitzuarbeiten, Ideen gemeinsam zu diskutieren und diese zu verwirklichen. Auch um diesen Anspruch zu erfüllen, ist das Syntopia kein Raum für rassistische, sexistische, homophobe oder sonstige Diskriminierung.

Das Syntopia setzt auf Selbstorganisation und die Stärkung basisdemokratischer Strukturen. Das zielt sowohl auf die Verwirklichung von Projekten und den Ladenbetrieb selbst, als auch auf die Anbindung an die Nachbarschaft und den Stadtteil ab.

Das Syntopia setzt sich für die Gestaltung und Veränderung der Stadt von unten ein und für die Teilhabe aller Menschen an den urbanen Ressourcen und Räumen. Somit ist das Syntopia auch Teil der Bewegung für ein „Recht auf Stadt“ in Duisburg und im Ruhrgebiet.

Was passiert im Syntopia?

Einiges! Seit Ladeneröffnung im August 2014 wurde eine Vielzahl von Projekten gestartet, unter anderem eine „Hilfe-zur-Selbsthilfe“ Fahrradwerkstatt, ein Umsonstladen/Givebox mit Kleidung, Büchern und Allerlei; Lebensmittelrettung mit regelmäßiger Ausgabe von Obst und Gemüse, gemütliche Film und Tresen Abende, veganer Mitmach-Brunch, Vorträge und Diskussionen zu Politik und Gesellschaft, wöchentliche Hausaufgaben-hilfe für Schüler*innen, monatlicher Lesekreis, Treffpunkt für politische Initiativen, Autorenlesungen, monatliches Frauencafé, handwerkliche Workshops…

Denkbar ist natürlich noch vieles mehr! Syntopia ist, was wir alle daraus machen – komm‘ vorbei und bring‘ Dich ein!
