Steel City Food Not Bombs

Be the first to review

Steel City Food Not Bombs is a Pittsburgh-based chapter of the international Food Not Bombs network, sharing free vegan food across the city since 2020. The collective operates from multiple public distribution points, rotating through neighborhoods including the Hill District and other sites on a weekly schedule. All food is plant-based, prepared and distributed entirely by volunteers, with no conditions on who can eat.

Food Not Bombs, as a network, is built on the premise that food scarcity is not a natural condition but a political one, maintained by systems that prioritize military spending and profit over meeting basic needs. Steel City FNB carries that politics directly into the work: distributing food alongside clothes, toiletries, and hygiene products; the collective approaches the service as mutual aid rather than service provision. There is no hierarchy in the collective’s structure, and decisions are made collectively, consistent with FNB’s founding orientation toward direct action and horizontal organizing.

Pittsburgh has a history of working-class and labor struggles, and Steel City FNB operates in that context, connecting the day-to-day work of food distribution to broader solidarity politics in the city. The collective has participated in coalition work with other local organizations, including co-hosting a community potluck with Jewish Voice for Peace in 2025. Their public presence across Pittsburgh’s neighborhoods and their consistent weekly schedule have made them a known point of contact for people navigating material hardship and for organizers looking to plug into grassroots mutual aid.
