All Power Books

Be the first to review

All Power Books is a worker‑owned radical bookstore, community space and mutual‑aid hub in the West Adams district of Los Angeles. Opening in June 2021, the cooperative grew out of the 2020 uprisings, when a group of local organizers sought a permanent space where neighbors could support one another beyond crisis. They chose the name “All Power” to invoke the Black Panther Party’s rallying cry, and the walls are painted with movement art and slogans that speak to anti‑racist, anti‑capitalist and abolitionist struggles.

Instead of operating as a typical retail shop, All Power Books functions as a community commons. Inside the storefront there are bookshelves and merchandise, but also racks of clothing, a community refrigerator, an open closet filled with soup cans and snacks, and tables piled with produce; everything except a handful of books and merchandise is donated and free. The space provides free wifi, a computer and printer, and a fully stocked free‑store so neighbors without stable housing can access resources or simply rest. Volunteer co‑operators host regular reading groups, film nights, writing workshops and teach‑ins. They also collaborate with West Adams residents to resist gentrification and displacement.

Mutual‑aid programs are central. The collective distributes free groceries, runs a tenants‑rights clinic and shares legal information. The All Power Free Clinic, staffed by volunteer nurses and medics, offers blood‑pressure checks, wound care and over‑the‑counter medicines every other Saturday at the bookshop’s grocery distribution. Volunteers also take pop‑up clinics to encampments and provide first‑aid training for street actions. During the wildfires and other crises, the shop has been converted into a distribution center for masks, food and emergency supplies. Through these solidarity programs, All Power Books embodies the principle that communities keep each other safe.

Visitors can support All Power Books by attending events, sharing resources, donating books or supplies, or purchasing radical literature. Solidarity and mutual aid keep the shop going—not charity. For updates, follow them on social media or stop by during open hours.
