A Radical Guide

Local Autonomous Network Story: Anarchy in the Philippines

Jason Bayless ·

Step into the world of anarchist and autonomist movements in the Philippines through a documentary collaboration between Pirate Studio and A Radical Guide. From autonomous spaces in Manila to communities across the archipelago, this film captures resistance and consciousness-building in action. Through intimate storytelling and raw cinematography, viewers witness communities reimagining society – where mutual aid replaces competition, self-determination guides governance, ecological wisdom shapes development, and direct action drives change. The documentary invites viewers to experience a living laboratory of alternative social structures taking root in Southeast Asian soil. Local Autonomous Network Story Poster

Beyond Theory: Living Anarchism in the Archipelago

The Local Autonomous Network (LAN) brings anarchist and autonomist values to life every day across the Philippines. From DIY punk scenes to Indigenous traditions, communities are actively decolonizing Western revolutionary theories and reclaiming their identities. This network of activists, artists, and grassroots collectives demonstrates how solidarity and cooperation serve as the foundation for a society without hierarchies.

While anarchism emerged from Western discourse, this movement adapts and reshapes these ideas within the unique context of the Archipelago. Many Indigenous communities here practiced values aligned with anarchism long before the term existed – making this both a historical reclamation and a forward-looking vision of autonomy and cooperation.

The Story We’ll Tell

The documentary weaves together multiple threads: the political and social landscape of the Philippines; the evolution of LAN and its network of autonomous spaces; and the practical applications of anarchist values through direct action, mutual aid, and creative resistance. We explore how communities run information shops, coordinate Food Not Bombs initiatives, produce zines, create podcasts, and build international solidarity networks.

At its heart, this film examines how revolutionary theories transform into lived experience. The director’s commitment is to show the full picture – the imperfections, challenges, lessons, and growth of individuals and collectives within the network. This approach creates a practical roadmap for others seeking to build collective power and autonomy.
